How do you make a scary movie night work for both of you?

Horror tolerance is rarely equal in a couple. Six habits that keep it fun for both of you:

  • How do you pick a horror movie when one of you hates horror?

Start in the first group and move one step scarier each time. Let the more nervous person choose the level, and the other choose the film within it.

  • Agree on a pause word

Either partner can stop the horror film or skip ahead, no teasing. A no-shame pause makes trying something scarier much easier.

  • Watch with the lights low, not off

Keeping enough light on to see each other's reactions is half the fun, and it keeps the scares at a fun level.

  • Plan the after-film

After a scary horror film, line up a comedy episode or something cosy to watch straight after the scarier picks so nobody goes to bed tense.

  • Rate it separately

In most couples, one partner will love a horror film and the other won't. Rating on your own before talking shows exactly how far apart you were.

  • Build a spooky-season queue

Add a handful of horror films to your shared watchlist in September so October nights are already planned.

Plan your spooky season together

Our Cinema is a shared watchlist for couples: one queue you both add to, both your ratings side by side, and a record of every movie night. Free to start.
