A cinema for your crew

Movie night for a group of friends

The simplest way to watch movies with friends is to move the list out of the group chat: one watchlist up to eight people can add to, rotating picks, ratings side by side, and every night written down. Here's how a friends cinema works, and sixteen films to watch with friends if you need something for tonight.

How do you run movie night with friends?

  1. Step 1

    Start the cinema

Sign up free, pick how many seats your group needs — up to eight — and your private cinema appears.

  2. Step 2

    Send one link

Every friend who opens the invite link takes a seat in your cinema. The link stays live until the last seat is filled, so nobody gets left out.

  3. Step 3

    Build the group watchlist

Anyone in the friends' cinema can add a film or a series. Turns rotate through the group, so the same person doesn't pick every week.

Why isn't a group chat a good watchlist?

  • Group chats lose the list

In a group chat, film titles scroll away between memes. A week later nobody remembers the three films everyone agreed on.

  • Streaming lists belong to one account

On Netflix or IMDb, whoever's logged in owns the watchlist. Your friends can look at it, but they can't add to it or rate anything.

  • Nothing remembers who was there

A plain watchlist says what your friends might watch. A watchlist says nothing about the nights you actually spent together.

Built for more than two

  • Turns that rotate

Our Cinema tracks who picked last and hands the pick to the next person in the group.

  • Everyone's stars

Each friend rates the film, and Our Cinema shows the spread — including who wildly disagreed.

  • Up to eight seats

Set the size of your friends' cinema when you start and change it later as your group grows.

  • Guest nights

A friend tagging along who isn't in the cinema can be logged as a guest, and the film is filed under who watched it.

  • Yes or no rounds

Five friends with five opinions can still agree: everyone goes through the queue alone and the app surfaces what you all said yes to.

  • Numbers for the group

The Numbers page shows hours watched, streaks, favourite genres, and a per-person filter across the whole year.

Give the whole crew a seat

Our Cinema gives up to eight friends one shared watchlist, fair turns, attendance for every night, everyone's own rating, and a history the group builds together.

How many people work best for a friends movie night?

A friends movie night works best with three to eight people. Three to five friends can agree on a film in a few minutes; with six to eight friends, rotating turns matter, because group votes start to stall.

Above eight people, a movie night becomes a party. Pick a crowd-pleaser in advance and treat the film as background rather than the main event.

How often should a friend group hold movie night?

Every two weeks is a sustainable rhythm for most friend groups. A weekly movie night burns out busy schedules within two months; a monthly movie night is easy to forget.

Fix the day of the week (for example, every other Thursday), so nobody has to schedule from scratch. The host can rotate with the turn to pick the film.

What does a well-run friends movie night look like?

Here is a worked example for a group of six. On Monday, whoever has the turn picks three films from the shared list and posts them. By Wednesday, the group has reacted, and the picker chooses one. On Thursday, the film starts at 8:00 pm sharp, with snacks already out at 7:45.

After the credits, each friend rates the film. Ratings stay hidden until everyone has filed theirs, so the loudest opinion does not set the score. The group's history then shows which friend picks the best films over a season.

What if someone always misses movie night?

Record who attended each night. A friend who misses a night can still rate the film later after watching it alone, so the friend stays part of the group's history instead of drifting away from it.
